[ Review ] Captain America: The Winter Solider
Plot– Two years after the events in The Avengers, Steve Rogers now works for S.H.I.E.L.D & is trying to adapt to the modern-day world. But corruption within S.H.I.E.L.D & the treat of the mysterious Winter Soldier give Captain America his most dangerous mission yet.
Review– Off top, this is the best Marvel movie to date that’s not called “The Avengers”. With the best script since the original Iron Man, & a few amazing action sequences, The Winter Soldier easily has a chance at being one of the summer’s biggest movies
The movie itself is interesting. Instead of being a special effects driven blockbuster, it is actually a story driven espionage film. In fact, if you took out most of the action, this film would blend right in with the spy movies of the 60s & 70s. Having the great Robert Redford in the film, in a role in which he can play almost effortlessly, only adds to the cool factor that this film already has.
Then, there is the Winter Soldier. A character, whose origins I won’t spoil if you’re not familiar with the comics, who’s Captain America’s most formidable foe yet. Which says a lot since The Red Skull was his equal & Loki was a God with an alien army at his disposal. The action scenes involving him are top-notch. Particularly his first face to face with Cap, which involves a fight better than anything you’ve seen in Phase One. It is a really fun scene, that ends with an unexpected revelation.
As far as the supporting cast, Scarlett Johansson is in rare form as The Black Widow. Anthony Mackie brings most of the comic relief as Sam Wilson, but also holds his own with the when he turns into The Falcon. On the bubble actor Frank Grillo brings the muscle as Brock Rumlow, & Samuel L Jackson FINALLY get in on the action, in probably the coolest car chase in recent memory to not be apart of The Fast and Furious franchise.
The bottom line Captain America 2 not only met my expectations, but exceeded them as well. The movie is basically The Avengers, The Manchurian Candidate & The Days of The Condor all rolled into one. And with a cliffhanger ending, I can’t wait to see Captain America start his next mission.
