[ Movie Review ] “A Haunted House 2” by Blade Brown
Plot- A year after the events of the first film, Malcolm has moved into a new home with his new girlfriend & her two children. But soon after moving in, he begins to experience more paranormal activity
Review– When walking into a Wayans brothers movie, I usually get what I pay for. Keenan Ivory Wayans, who I think is criminally under-appreciated for what he has brought to the entertainment business, rarely let’s me down. Sadly, he had nothing to do with this project.
The movie does what the Wayans do best: spoof films. Unfortunately, this is probably one of the worst films any of the Wayans brothers have been apart of. Set aside Marcy X & Dungeons and Dragons, of course. Which is a shame considering the comedic talent involved.
Marlon Wayans, Cedric The Entertainer, Essence Atkins & Affion Crocket all return for the sequel. With newcomers Jaime Pressly & Gabriel Iglesias joining the cast, this should’ve been a step forward from the first film. Instead, it treads familiar ground by doing the exact same jokes they made in the first film. Not saying the film doesn’t have moments that make you laugh, but they usually come in the form of wisecracks, while the set up punchlines fall flat. Hard.
Marlon Wayans & Affion Crocket, who would presumably be the funniest men in the film, both try entirely too hard to sell you a product that is not worth purchasing. While Marlon is clearly over acting to try & sell you his crap material(He co-wrote & produced the movie), Affion’s character Ray Ray comes off as just plain annoying. The funniest moments in the movie come from Iglasias’ Miguel. When he comes on screen, the movie’s vibe totally changes, as the screen-time him & Marlon have together is the only thing this movie has going for it.
The Bottom Line– I fully expect this movie to wind up in my top 10 worse movies of the year. While it has a few bright spots, this is overall a very dumb movie. Don’t waste your money, it’ll be playing on Stars in a few months.
