[ Movie Review ] “22 Jump Street” by Blade Brown
Plot– After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt and Jenko when they go deep undercover at a local college.
Review– All movies that are based off of TV shows are a joke. Ok, S.W.A.T was pretty good, and Starsky and Hutch was funny. But for the most part, TV shows turned into movies are a bad idea. So it was a pleasant surprise when 21 Jump Street came out at how good it was. It was so good & so successful, it got the greenlight for a sequel. And the sequel is pretty damn good itself.
The movie starts off in TV show form. There is a “previously on 21 Jump Street” recap briefly shows highlights from the first film, while thrusting you into the opening scene in which Jenko(Channing Tatum) & Schmidt(Jonah Hill) go undercover to arrest a drug dealer. After the attempt fails, the Deputy Chief decides to put th back in the Jump Street program that they previously had success, insisting they “Just do the same thing as before”. A subtle shot at what most sequels end up doing. I’m looking at you, “The Hangover 2”.
From there, we jump to Jump Street. Which has moved across the street, and is directly opposite the under construction building of 23 Jump Street(Get it? A third one is in the making). Under the orders of Captain Dickson(A scene stealing Ice Cube) the duo are sent to college to investigate a new drug called “WhyPhy”(WiFi). Once in college, the partners experience friction. Unlike in their last case, at college Jenko excels & Schmidt feels like the outcast. Its tearing them apart, and at one point they even take a couples counseling session.
Tatum & Hill are both great in their roles. They feed off of each other’s energy and the scenes they have together are genuinely funny. But the best character in the movie is easily Ice Cube’s Captain Dickson. In a expanded role from the first film, we get a lot more of the foul mouth commanding officer, who is apart of the biggest & funniest twist of the film.
The Bottom Line- While not the funniest movie of the year(Neighbors still holds that title), 22 Jump Street is a very worthy sequel. If its not funnier, its just as funny as the original. And seeing how the original was one of the funniest movies of 2012, that’s saying something.
