Film Review: “10 Cloverfield Lane” by Blade Brown
“10 Cloverfield Lane” Movie Review
Plot: A woman discovers the horrifying truth about the outside world while living in an underground shelter with two men.
The only negative thing I have to say about 10 Cloverfield Lane is that they’ve let the cat out the bag that it has ties to Cloverfield. Had you walked in knowing nothing about the movie, the shock value of the third act would be a lot higher. Even still, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a masterfully crafted movie that will leave you wanting more once it ends.
After leaving her fiance, Michelle gets in a horrible car accident. Awakening some time later, she find herself chained in a basement and finds out a man named Howard found her on the road and took her to his shelter underground. His former employee, Emmett is in the shelter with them, and Howard informs them both that everyone outside the shelter is dead. Killed by an airborne virus. From there, the tension between the three builds as the story Howard told them becomes more skeptical. Leading to dramatic climax, that leads somewhere else.
The film has a perfect pace. It’s as suspenseful as the best Hitchcock story and is brilliantly acted. John Goodman gives a multi-layered performance that finds him being funny and menacing. At times, even in the same scene. Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the perfect choice for the female lead. She’s had a good career playing resilient women, and she plays this one soundly. She never feels like a damsel in distress. And once the third act comes, its great to see her in action.
THE BOTTOM LINE
At this moment, 10 Cloverfield Lane is the best movie of the year. With the only negative thing being you’re expecting a surprise at some point, the movie is extremely entertaining and opens up a world of opportunity by the time it comes to an end. Its more of a standalone movie than a sequel or prequel, but knowing the connection between the two will absolutely spoil the surprises that are to come. My advice, if you have no clue what Cloverfield is, don’t look it up. Just enjoy this movie for what it is.
