Album Review: Lupe Fiasco “Tetsuo & Youth” by Blade Brown
Artist: Lupe Fiasco
Album: “Tetsuo & Youth”
Almost three full years after his last album, Lupe Fiasco delivers the goods on his fifth, and presumably last studio album “Tetsuo & Youth”. With a much more aggressive tone than his previous efforts, Lupe seems hell bent on cementing his place as one of the best lyricists of all time.
The album begins with the nearly nine minute long song “Mural”. On the track, Lupe spits for nearly 8 minutes and provides the signature wordplay that his fans have grown accustomed to over his career. Next is a song that will probably remain one of my favorite songs throughout the entire year: “Blur My Hands”. This record features an infectious hook from Guy Sebastian and a cinematic instrumental, which lays the groundwork for Mr. Fiasco to do what he does best. If they decide to make this an official single, I think it has potential to be a bigger hit than “Superstar”.
The album is full of cuts that will test your patience as a listener. He has quite a few records that break the six minute mark. Which in most cases isn’t really a issue, as the album is clearly one of the best he’s ever made. “Dots & Lines”, “Prisoner 1 & 2” and “Body of Work” all either nearly hit or exceed six minutes. While one of the album’s standout tracks, “Chopper” lands at a whopping 9 minutes and 32 seconds.
The previous records used as promotional singles, “Next To It”, “Pu$$y”, “Mission”, “Old School Love” & “Remission” are nowhere to be found on this album. Which actually maybe one of its saving factors, as this album has a distinct tone to it, and those records may have thrown off the vibe. But the official lead single “Deliver” featuring Ty Dolla $ign is the perfect lead for this project.
While its not his best album(That title belongs to the masterpiece that is called The Cool) this album is the perfect way to spark 2015 for Hip-Hop. If this is indeed the last album from Lupe as he’s been saying, he left the game Hakeem The Dream. With a win, and at the top of his game.
